| H.G.
Wells' The War of the Worlds has been adapted several times for
radio, but most adaptations have not been faithful to the book's period
and setting. The most famous radio version, Orson Wells' 1931 Halloween
broadcast updated the story to a contemporary New Jersey town and BBC and
NPR versions have also updated the material.
As the pilot for a series
of audio dramas from Thayne Multimedia called Mind's Eye Theater, I was
asked to do an Old Time Radio-style script that remained true to the
novel.
That fully-dramatized
audiobook is now available
in MP3 format. It's set in 1898 and is believed to be the most
authentic adaptation ever.
It follows James
Herbert-George across a British landscape ravaged by Martian invaders and
also traces his brother Jason's flight from London.
British actor and
voice-over artist Martin Tott stars along with a full cast. The
musical score is from Yiannis
Kranidiotis.
(H.G. Wells also authored, The Invisible Man, The Island of Doctor
Moreau and other science fiction tales.)
