Si Reardon Series

Fool’s Run

Si Reardon knows nobody wants to hire an ex-cop fresh out of prison unless it’s for a job nobody wants.

His only offer’s from Rose Cantor, an elegant and beautiful “special counsel” who just wants him to take a meeting.

Her clients Grace and Adam Holst are asking for extreme justice. A very bad man named Valentine Alexeeva, a criminal on the rise, once ordered the deaths of their young daughters over a business deal gone wrong. Alexeeva covered his tracks well. Now he’s still deadly but cultivating a classy façade and making friends in high places.

Si would like to say no, but he has a daughter of his own who’s in danger, and he needs money fast.

Dealing with Alexeeva means jeopardizing everything and drawing on contacts Si met in lockup plus The McCluskeys, a pair of weird, bayou-dwelling brothers with a few nefarious enterprises of their own.

And Si knows no job is ever as simple as it looks. He soon finds himself embroiled in a game with Alexeeva and his brutal minions, a game that could earn Si a bit of redemption or cost him his freedom or his life.

Long Waltz

An unsolved mystery upends Si Reardon’s sunny Florida plans to recover from the events of Fool’s Run and reconnect with his daughter. Si’s strange luck throws him into a bizarre sometimes zany maelstrom of Hollywood stars, sleazy producers grim practical jokers and a ghostly presence that won’t let him rest.

Gretta Carr disappeared years ago, just after a standout turn in a big-budget film. Now that film’s fading stars and producers are back on Florida beaches for a lower-budget sequel to jump-start careers.

Gretta’s sister sees it as an opportunity perfect for Si’s unconventional investigation style. Someone from Hollywood knows more than they’re telling. A premium fee makes it too promising to pass up. It might just be enough to stake Si for a custody fight.

Trouble on the film set soon draws Si into a security gig, and as the production’s bedeviled by escalating mishaps and worse, Si’s faced not just with unlocking secrets from the past but protecting troubled actors with dark secrets of their own. He’ll again need the muscle of the bayou-dwelling McCluskys, the brains of gender-neutral hacker Jael and new allies too if he’s going to come out the other side of a perfect storm of mayhem and wickedness.

Good action sequences, a New Orleans setting, a plot with a number of twists, and a mastermind villain who will almost surely show up in future stories. There is a tease that slavic pagan magic might be involved to some degree; I suspect this will be brought forward in later books.
